Why Michigan has started to kill Canada geese, rather than relocate them

After 50 years of removing and relocating Canada geese from communities around Michigan, the state is changing course.

A new policy quietly began at the end of summer to euthanize any geese that need to be removed.

If a Canada goose needs to be removed from a water source, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is no longer taking them to a new home. The department said it has no choice but to kill them now.

Roughly 80 years ago, Canada geese were nearly extinct in Michigan -- now they number more than 300,000. It’s causing more conflicts with people.

What we know: Argument between children leads to 16-year-old shooting mother, teen in Detroit

An argument between children Thursday night in Detroit led to a teen and a mother being shot.

The shooting happened on Nov. 7 in the 800 block of Delaware Street around 6 p.m.

Police said a 6-year-old and 8-year-old got into an argument. Then, older children got involved, as well as the mother of one of the children.

The mother’s 16-year-old son then showed up with a gun and shot a 14-year-old in the head and his mother.

Body dumped at Waterford movie theater, police investigate

A body was dumped at a movie theater in Waterford late Thursday night.

Police said the body was found at the MJR movie theater on M-59 near Williams Lake at around 11:30 p.m.

Michigan regulators approve 2.28% DTE gas rate increase. Here’s what this means for residents

The Michigan Public Service Commission approved an average increase of 2.28% in gas rates for DTE Gas Company customers.

DTE Gas Company, a subsidiary of DTE Energy, filed a request in January to raise rates by $266 million. DTE said this increase would fund infrastructure investments, provide funding to update its natural gas transmission and distribution system, and support maintenance costs.

The requested amount included $106 million that was already reflected in rates from a surcharge that had already been approved. This meant that it would have been a $160 million increase for DTE customers.
