Officer hurt, suspect killed in Jackson County shooting

JACKSON, Mich. – A Jackson officer was injured and a suspect was killed in a shootout that allegedly stemmed from a shooting involving the suspect’s brother.

Suspect shoots brother in Lenawee County

At 5:09 p.m. on Nov. 6, the Lenawee County Sheriff‘s Office notified Jackson County Central Dispatch that a suspect had allegedly shot his brother at 4:30 p.m.

A tracking device showed the suspect’s vehicle traveling through Jackson County.

Suspect found in Jackson County, pursuit initiated

Jackson officers located the suspect’s maroon van in the 1000 block of Cooper Street on the city’s east side.

Officers coordinated with deputies to stop the vehicle, but when authorities approached the van, the suspect sped off.

A pursuit was initiated, and within a minute, the suspect started shooting at the officers and deputies, according to police.

Several homes and cars were shot during the chase. No residents were hurt, but an officer was shot.

Jackson sergeant shot

A sergeant was shot at 5:41 p.m. at Van Dorn and Elizabeth Streets, according to police.

The bullet allegedly went through his arm and into his body. He was taken to a local hospital, where he is in “good condition,” police said.

Suspect killed during gunfire exchange

Law enforcement officials were able to stop the suspect, but multiple shots were exchanged, and the suspect was struck.

Life-saving measures were performed on the suspect at the scene. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The officers and deputies were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of the shooting, per the department’s policy.

Michigan State Police will investigate.

Pipe bombs found in suspect’s vehicle

Several pipe bombs were found in the suspect’s vehicle. Authorities believe he threw these out of his car during the chase.

If anyone sees any of them, they should not pick them up, and call 911 to report their findings.
