DETROIT – The holiday season is upon us and the Salvation Army is once again installing the world’s tallest red kettle in Downtown Detroit.
The installation marks the start of the Red Kettle Christmas Campaign, with red kettles being placed at storefronts in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
The 26,000 LED lights on the 56-foot tall, 24-foot wide red kettle in Cadillac Square will stay unlit until the Detroit Tree Lighting ceremony on Friday, Nov. 22.
The installation comes with the recent opening of the Downtown Detroit Markets and the Christmas tree arriving in Campus Martius.
It will symbolize the Salvation Army’s commitment to serving members of the community during the holiday season and throughout the year.
During this year’s Christmas campaign, the organization hopes to raise $7 million to support the Metro Detroit community with food, shelter and other community programs.
In the last year, the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit provided 2,509,655 meals and 447,374 nights of shelter to the homeless, according to the nonprofit.
