Fatal shooting in Redford motel leads to murder charge against boyfriend

Boyfriend allegedly shot her in the face

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jose Angel Oquendo-Torruella, 39, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of girlfriend Valentina Colban, 37, also of Detroit.

The incident occurred on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, around 4:57 a.m., as Redford police were dispatched to a motel in the 9900 block of Telegraph Road for a reported shooting.

Officials say upon their arrival, they located Colban inside a motel room, suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.

Medics arrived on the scene and transported the 39-year-old woman to a Metro Detroit hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Allegedly, Oquendo-Torruella had a handgun and discharged it, striking Colban in the face and fatally wounding her.

Oquendo-Torruella has been charged with second-degree murder and felony firearm.

He is expected to be charged on Nov. 12, 2024, in 17th District Court at 11 a.m.
