A new study from the University of Michigan shared the top reasons teens are vaping. The study examined data from students in eighth, tenth and 12th grade.
From experimentation to relaxation, the following data shows how many students vape by their grades:
- 1.7% of eighth graders
- 4.2% of tenth graders
- 7.8% of 12th graders
Significant numbers said they vape to “feel good” or because it was” more convenient” than cigarettes. 43% said they are hooked and have to vape.
Researchers found vaping is the primary way teens use nicotine, and relaxation was the most common reason.
The University of Michigan study, “Reasons for Vaping Among U.S. Adolescents,” found curiosity, boredom and stress relief were key drivers. The study used in-school surveys of U.S. students in eighth, tenth and 12th grades.
On the same day this study was released, tobacco prevention advocates will testify in Lansing in support of stricter regulations. The hearing will address proposed tobacco retail licensing, youth tobacco penalty reforms and the restoration of local control on tobacco sales.
The advocacy group said tobacco kills more than 16,200 Michiganders annually—more than AIDS, alcohol, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined.
