DETROIT – A 15-year-old Detroit boy has been charged in connection to injuring his 32-year-old mother and killing a 14-year-old boy in a shooting that stemmed from an argument between children.
The teen has been charged with second-degree murder and felony firearm.
He isn‘t being charged as an adult but has been adult designated, which means upon conviction, a judge can sentence him as a juvenile, adult, or “a blended juvenile sentence with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is not rehabilitated,” according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
The teen’s preliminary examination is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
How an argument led to the shooting
At about 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, Detroit officers responded to the area of Seward Street and Second Avenue after receiving a report of a shooting.
When they arrived they found a 14-year-old boy on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital, and died from his injuries on Monday, Nov. 11, the prosecutor’s office said.
The 32-year-old woman was privately taken to a hospital.
The 15-year-old and the 14-year-old allegedly were involved in an argument, that escalated, and the 15-year-old pulled out a gun and fired several shots.
He struck his mother in the right arm, and the 14-year-old was shot in the head, left arm, right hand and left thigh.
Detroit police said that this argument stemmed from another argument between a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old. Older children and the mother of one of the kids got involved, and then the mother’s 15-year-old son showed up and fired shots.
The teen had run away from the scene after the shooting but was arrested by officers who were part of an undercover operation separate from this shooting.
