DETROIT – Three Michigan State Police troopers were injured after a driver crashed into their patrol cars while they were investigating a crash on I-94, police said.
At 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, troopers were blocking the right lanes of westbound I-94 near Trumbull Avenue to investigate a crash.
While they were investigating, a 32-year-old Harper Woods man driving a Chevy Malibu hit the back of a patrol car. The man continued westbound and then rear-ended another patrol car, according to state police.
The three troopers that were in the two cars were taken to a local hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
The driver was arrested for impaired driving. The case will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office for review.
The freeway had been closed at M-10 for an investigation but has since reopened.
“We often talk about risky driving behaviors being the cause of most traffic crashes here in Michigan,” said Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw. “This driver decided not only to not move over for emergency vehicles, but drive impaired as well. We are fortunate that these troopers were not seriously hurt.“
