CLAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The body of a missing 78-year-old man was recovered from a canal in St. Clair County on Monday evening, officials said.

Clay Township police called the St. Clair County Dive Team to assist in locating the missing man.

Family members told authorities that the 78-year-old was last seen at about 4:30 p.m.

When the dive team arrived at his home on Anchor Bay Drive, they discovered a broken dock board and other factors that revealed the man might have entered the water.

During the investigation, divers found the missing man in the canal and pronounced him dead at the scene.

“Drownings are an especially tragic event, for the victim, their family, and the responders,” said St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family during this time.”

Clay Township police will continue to investigate, according to the sheriff’s office.
