Parents charged after 5-year-old child fatally shoots himself in Westland home

WESTLAND, Mich. – A Westland mother and father were charged after their child got a hold of a gun and fatally shot himself Thursday evening.

It happened in the 33000 block of Alamo Court in Westland on Nov. 7, 2024. According to police, the 5-year-old child had access to an unsecured gun and shot himself inside the home. The child died from his injuries that evening.

Timithy Gravel, 32, and Heather LeBlanc, 29, were arrested for violating Michigan‘s Safe Storage Law, leading to the child’s death.

Gravel was placed on bond of $50,000 cash or surety and was ordered to have a GPS tether if bond is posted. LeBlanc was placed bond of $25,000 cash or surety and was also ordered to have a GPS tether if bond is posted.

Both are scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 21, 2024, at 9 a.m.
