Roseville man charged in fatal Detroit crash involving children

Alcohol suspected to be factor in crash

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Ahmad Nyjahjuan Jatta, 30, of Roseville, in connection with a car crash that killed a 7-year-old boy and injured a 5-year-old girl, a 21-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman all of Detroit.

On Nov. 9, 2024, at 4:38 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the intersection of East 7 Mile Road and Mound Road for a reported car crash.

Upon their arrival, officers located the 7-year-old victim unresponsive, lying next to the vehicle.

Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the 7-year-old victim deceased.

The remaining victims were transported to a Metro Detroit hospital for treatment.

It is alleged that Jatta was intoxicated, driving at a high rate of speed westbound on East 7 Mile Road, when he struck the victims’ vehicle, fatally injuring the 7-year-old victim, before fleeing the scene on foot.

Jatta has been charged with one count of operating while intoxicated, causing death, and three counts of operating while intoxicated, causing serious injury.

The 30-year-old was arraigned Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024, afternoon in the 36th District Court and given a $500,000 cash/surety bond.

A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for Nov. 14, 2024, at 9 a.m.

The probable cause conference is scheduled for Nov. 25, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., and the preliminary examination is scheduled for Dec. 2, 2024, at 8:45 a.m.
