DETROIT – Vending machines, that allow users to give instead of get, are being put in Detroit’s Campus Martius to support charities during the holiday season.
People can use these Giving Machines to purchase clothing, hygiene items and even livestock for people in need.
These vending machines will be in Campus Martius from Nov. 14 through Dec. 8.
What are the Giving Machines?
The Giving Machines are sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to “provide an instant act of service for people looking to help those in their community and around the world,” according to a release from the church.
Since these machines were first launched in 2017, more than $32 million in donations have been collected. Last year, about 600,000 people visited these vending machines in Canada, Guatemala, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines and the United States, providing about $10.4 million in donations.
A study found that 61% of Americans are more motivated to make charitable donations during the holiday season, and 68% of donors prioritize donating to organizations that relate to food, shelter and health care during the holidays, according to the release.
“We are called to care for those in need and to be a light to the world,” said Jeff Day, a stake president in metro Detroit for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “We strive to follow the example of Jesus Christ by loving others as He loves each of us. We’re excited to come together with diverse faith communities to demonstrate this love.”
How do Giving Machines work?
People can select items including clothing, hygiene items, meals, educational supplies, livestock, emergency shelter and more from the vending machine that range from $5 to $250.
Once they pay for the item, which can be done with credit cards, debit cards and mobile payment services, a card with a photo of the item they donated will be vended and fall to the bottom of the machine.
