Nonprofit calling for volunteers to help lay wreaths at Great Lakes National Cemetery

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – Wreaths Across America is calling out for volunteers for its upcoming event at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.

Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit organization that lays wreaths for veterans’ final resting places in 4,700 military cemeteries around the world. The wreath-laying event will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery, located at 4200 Belford Road, beginning at 11 a.m. on Dec. 14, 2024. Wreath laying will begin after the ceremony.

The nonprofit aims to reach 30,000 sponsored wreaths. They are currently just a little over 13,000.

How to be a volunteer

Volunteers must register on Wreaths Across America’s website. A button will appear on the homepage labeled “volunteer.”

Volunteers will be placing wreaths on graves and are asked to say the veteran’s name before placing the wreath.

Where to park

All volunteer parking will be off-site at the Ascension Genesys Hospital, located at 1 Genesys Parkway off Holly Road. Signs will be directed on where to park. Free bus rides to the cemetery will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 14.

Parking at the cemetery is only for elderly volunteers and people who need accessible parking.

Sponsoring a wreath

To sponsor a wreath, visit the nonprofit’s website. Sponsoring some helps the organization place more wreaths at the cemetery.

Sponsoring a wreath costs $17 each.

Wreath pick-up

Clean-up day will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at 9 a.m.
