DETROIT – A teenager is recovering after being shot by her 5-year-old brother.
The shooting occurred at a home on Freeland Street near Fenkell Avenue on Detroit’s west side.
Police say the gun was in a safe in the home, but the key was left accessible, allowing the boy to get ahold of it.
Officials say the girl was shot in her arm and chest, but she is expected to survive.
Law enforcement officials encouraging parents to take more precautions.
“Children do not understand life is life,” said Detroit Board of Police Commissioners Tamara Smith.“It can be ended at any second. You need to lock your guns up. The guns need to not be in the presence of children.”
