Detroit woman charged in connection to crash on I-75 that killed 4-year-old son

DETROIT – A Detroit mother was charged in connection to a car crash that killed her 4-year-old son.

The crash happened on northbound I-75 near Piquette Street at around 1 p.m. on May 6, 2024. According to police, Shaniqua Lashauntae Baskins, 30, knowingly drove with faulty brakes and her son unsecure in the car.

Baskins was traveling westbound on I-94 towards northbound I-75 when the brakes on her car failed. She crossed over the grass median on I-75 and struck another car. The impact of the crash caused her son to be thrown from the rear driver’s side window of the car and onto the highway. He died from his injuries.

Baskins was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Second Degree Child Abuse. She was arraigned Friday morning and was given a $20,000 bond.

A bond redetermination hearing is scheduled for Nov. 18, 2024, at 9 a.m. A probable cause conference is scheduled for Nov. 25, 2024, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for Dec. 2, 2024.
