Former Detroit Lions linebacker charged in Jan. 6 riot, per NBC News

According to NBC News, former Detroit Lions linebacker Leander Antwione Williams was charged for the Jan. 6 riot.

Williams was arrested in Georgia on Thursday (Nov. 14) for assaulting police officers during the attack at the U.S. Capitol.

The 31-year-old was selected by the Lions in the fifth round (169th overall) in the 2016 draft.

Williams, who played in 14 games during his rookie campaign with the Lions, accumulated 12 tackles.

After one season in Detroit, he was waived in 2017 and later signed with NFC North Division foe the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad but was waived again in 2018.

He signed with the Seattle Seahawks practice squad in 2018 but was released again in only two days.

Williams was later signed by the Carolina Panthers in 2018 but was waived during final roster cuts in 2019.

The 31-year-old was arrested in Savannah, Georgia, and charged with felony counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and obstruction of law enforcement.

Williams was also charged with three misdemeanors related to entering and remaining on restricted Capitol buildings and grounds, disorderly conduct, and acts of physical violence.

He is accused of joining others in the pro-Donald Trump mob as it attacked police to enter the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, following months of lies about an election that Trump lost.
