DETROIT – Two Detroit Hospitals have received “F’s” in terms of patient safety.
It’s actually worse than last year, as both Detroit Receiving and Sinai Grace had “Ds” last year—now it’s even more of a failing grade.
“Statewide, the trend is for patient safety to be going down in hospitals, which is really unfortunate because when we talk about patient safety, we’re talking about things people get after they go to the hospital,” said Economic Alliance for Michigan President and CEO Bret Jackson.
The report card is in, and both Sinai Grace and Detroit Receiving received “Fs” in patient safety.
Jackson just wants to see the system get better.
“This hospital used to be a perennial “A” hospital system, and they were doing a really great job. They are now doing poor in things like blood infections, sepsis after surgery, problems with surgical wounds splitting open after surgery, or serious breathing problems. These are all things that hospitals are generally trained to deal with and try to prevent - and the DMC hospitals right now are doing pretty poorly," Jackson said.
The Leapfrog Group is a patient safety organization that releases grades through a combination of publicly reported data and surveys. Out of all the hospitals in the state, Sinai Grace and Receiving are the only two with “Fs.”
“Just down the road at Henry Ford, Henry Ford’s an “A” grade. So, they’re not getting sicker or more difficult patients than Henry Ford is getting, yet in the same community with that same population, one is able to deliver very high-quality care, and the other is struggling and needs to take this more seriously," Jackson said.
Only 14 hospitals in the entire country received Fs, most of which were due to their failure to participate in the survey.
“When a hospital doesn’t report, we kinda have to assume that they’re not measuring to meet this very important standard in care, or else they would be completing the survey. And if a hospital doesn’t measure, they don’t know if they’re doing well or if they can do better,” said Leap Frog Group Lead Program Analyst for hospital safety grades, Alex Campione.
DMC does not believe it’s fair since they never participated in the survey.
“Detroit Medical Center does not submit data or participate in the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Grades are still published even though there is incomplete or dated information.”
