DETROIT – Detroit was recently named on a list of the best places to travel to in 2025 by “Travel + Leisure.”
The places on the list were chosen by magazine staff after they reviewed 120 different destinations.
They chose the destinations based on “what feels like right now.”
“To make it on our list requires more than just a hotly anticipated opening or two,” said Travel + Leisure writers. “These are places that feel of the moment, whether that’s because they offer unparalleled access to the outdoors, a cultural immersion you can’t find anywhere else, a pulse-quickening hit of excitement, or the sort of blissful luxury only a true five-star property can deliver.”
Detroit was included on the list within the “For Big City Thrills” category.
The article pointed out the success of the Detroit Lions and the almost 800,000 who took part in the 2024 NFL Draft hosted in the heart of the city.
“It really is a magical time in Detroit right now, and we hope people will come to check it out for themselves,” Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said in an email to Travel + Leisure.
The list also references other new developments in the city, including the Book Tower. This historic building reopened in 2023 after a nearly $400 million renovation, and being vacant for years.
The reopening of Michigan Central Station, the Shinola Hotel and General Motor’s moving into downtown’s new Hudson’s development are also factors mentioned by the writers that show how Detroit is having its moment right now.
Other cities also ranked as best places for “Big city thrills” include the following:
- Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China
- Marrakesh
- Portland
- Rome
- Sacramento, California
