Detroit People Mover to reopen on Nov. 27: What to know

Detroit People Mover closed for track replacement

Detroit People Mover. (WDIV)

DETROIT – The Detroit People Mover is set to reopen on Wednesday.

People should expect to see trains on the track Nov. 25 through Nov. 26, as they go through a testing period of the newly replaced rail. Once reviewed and approved, the People Mover will officially open at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, just in time for America’s Thanksgiving Parade presented by Gardner White.

The Detroit People Mover closed in September so workers could replace sections of track. The track improvement project was done proactively. It involved 7,000 feet of rail on nine curves and adjacent connecting straight track. The goal was to extend the life of the rail system and make the ride smoother and quieter. The replacement track is expected to last at least 15 to 30 years.

According to the People Mover website, this is only the third rail replacement project in the history of the Detroit People Mover. Different curves and adjacent track were replaced during similar projects in 2008 and 2016. At least one more of these types of projects is expected to take place five years or more in the future to replace any original curve sections.

Detroit People Mover schedule

The Detroit People Mover free fare courtesy of Priority Waste is also returning. This means anyone can ride for free.

The People Mover will officially open at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024. It will be open with 36-hour non-stop service over Thanksgiving.

After Thanksgiving, the People Mover will be open under the following schedule:

  • Monday through Friday: 6:30 a.m. until midnight.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. until midnight.
  • Sunday: 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Will the Detroit People Mover be free in 2025?

Yes. In June, the DTC Board of Directors approved a resolution that allows the Zero Fare program to continue through 2025.
