Detroit – With the holidays around the corner, safety in the kitchen is more important than ever. For starters, make sure those smoke alarms are up and working.
In fact, nearly 3 out of 5 home fire deaths were caused by fires in homes with no smoke alarm or ones that failed to operate. That’s according to the National Fire Protection Association.

In Detroit, residents can get a smoke alarm installed in their home free of charge thanks to the Detroit Fire Department.
The fire department has installed smoke alarms for residents free of charge for years. This year it announced the launch of a large-scale smoke alarm installation initiative.
Through Oct. 2025, the fire department will be working to install 5,000 smoke alarms in homes. DFD members will install 3 to 5 smoke alarms in nearly 1,600 homes depending on the size and need.
You must be a resident of Detroit to qualify for the program.
