Body found near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore identified as missing kayaker

Body identified as kayaker missing since September

Miners Castle (National Park Service)

MUNISING, Mich. – A body that washed ashore from Lake Superior near Michigan’s Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore earlier this month has been identified as a missing kayaker, state police said.

State police identified the body as 65-year-old John Kueber, who was last seen on Sept. 22 and was believed to have been kayaking on Lake Superior.

State police and other law enforcement agencies extensively searched for Kueber but couldn’t find him.

Then, on Nov. 8, troopers responded to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore after hikers found a body that had washed ashore from Lake Superior.

The body that was found couldn’t be initially identified, according to state police, but now, through DNA analysis, the body has been identified as Kueber.

State police say foul play is not suspected.

“This is not the outcome any of us were hoping for,” said Michigan State Lt. Ben Eckola. “We offer our condolences to the family, friends, and all those who knew Mr. Kueber. We also thank all those who assisted in the search efforts.”

Kueber’s family has been notified.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post at 906-475-9922.
