Court celebrates as 9 children find homes on Adoption Day in Oakland County

Six families finalized adoptions

It was Adoption Day in Oakland County, and there were many happy tears as families made it official.

On most days, the court system rarely participates in a celebration, but Tuesday (Nov. 26) was special.

Six families finalized adoptions early Tuesday morning at Oakland Oakland County Circuit Court. Nine children were adopted in an emotional ceremony.

On Adoption Day, the Duff’s officially added two family members.

“They’re good kids, they’re good boys, they work hard,” said Nick Duff.

“It’s been a long process,” said Alaina Duff. “We’re just happy. I know the boys are happy; they already feel like they’re part of the family.”

Maurice Marion, 13, and 15-year-old Makai Million joined the Duffs in 2021.

“I totally recognize that it can be hard for a lot of young people, but it’s important to recognize this transition is part of a very long life,” said 6th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Lorie Savin.

Typically, adoptions are finalized in private. However, more than 30 courts across the state opened their doors during National Adoption Month.

Raising awareness and hoping to inspire others to consider adoption.

“My hope for today is we don’t fail any of these children,” Savin said. “We succeed and help every single young person find a home that will have love, support, and guidance.”

Just in time for Thanksgiving, Nick and Alaina say they’ve been waiting years for this moment.

“It’s a very exciting moment, it’s almost like a speechless moment,” Marion said.

“I mean, it’s special, a lot of nerves today; one of my sons was anxious, but I’m proud of them, it’s going to be a nice Thanksgiving,” Nick said.

Nationwide, more than 100,000 children are waiting to be adopted from foster care.
