Detroit – With the holidays around the corner, safety in the kitchen is more important than ever. For starters, make sure those smoke alarms are up and working.
Nearly three out of five home fire deaths were caused by fires in homes with no smoke alarm or ones that failed to operate. That’s according to the National Fire Protection Association.
Thanks to the Detroit Fire Department, residents can get a smoke alarm installed in their homes free of charge.
For years, the fire department has installed smoke alarms for residents free of charge.
This year, it announced the launch of a large-scale smoke alarm installation initiative.
Through Oct. 2025, the fire department will be working to install 5,000 smoke alarms in homes.
Depending on the size and need, DFD members will install 3 to 5 smoke alarms in nearly 1,600 homes.
You must be a resident of Detroit to qualify for the program.
You can request a smoke alarm installation for your home by calling DFD’s Community Relations Division at (313) 596-2900 or e-mailing communityrelations@detroitmi.gov.
