DETROIT – Detroit’s Eastern Market was buzzing with activity on Tuesday as families lined up for the 27th annual All-Star Giveback, a tradition that provides Thanksgiving meals to families in need.
Organized by former NBA All-Star Derrick Coleman, the event has grown from handing out 200 turkeys in his Detroit neighborhood to distributing more than 5,000 turkeys and food baskets this year.
Volunteers and celebrities joined forces to support the community, with families waiting hours to receive their meals.
“It actually started in my neighborhood,” Coleman said. “I’m from 12th Street here in Detroit. Now, we’re making sure families have not only access to food but also hope.”
Coleman wasn’t the only basketball legend on hand. Gary Payton, one of the greatest NBA point guards of all time, traveled from Oakland, California, to participate. Payton emphasized the importance of giving back.
“God put us on this Earth to do this type of stuff,” Payton said. “He gave us fame and money so we can return to our cities and help where it’s needed most.”
As food prices continue to climb, events like the All-Star Giveback provide vital relief. Local residents expressed gratitude for the support.
“We need more of this,” said Detroit resident Dionne Stanley. “The way costs are rising, this really helps our community.”
While the lines were long, many said the wait was well worth it.
“It was a long wait, but it was worth it,” Stanley said.
The All-Star Giveback is about more than just food. It’s a celebration of hope and unity, exemplifying the true meaning of Thanksgiving and Detroit’s comeback spirit.
“If we can go to Houston and take over for a football game, why can’t we do the same and take over for our city?” Coleman said.
If you missed Tuesday’s (Nov. 26) giveaway, organizers recommend contacting your local food bank. Many similar events will continue to provide support through Thanksgiving.
