DETROIT – The man accused of shooting a 2-year-old boy Tuesday night in Detroit’s east side turned himself in, police confirmed.

The shooting happened on Tuesday, Nov. 26, just before 7 p.m. in the 553 block of Dickerson Avenue. Officials said the child was shot in the leg and was taken to a local hospital. He is expected to be okay.

When police arrived at the scene, they found at least 15 shell casings from an apparent domestic issue.

“The ex-boyfriend gets into a shootout with the new boyfriend, and in the exchange of gunfire, his child was shot,” said interim Detroit police Chief Todd Bettison.

Officials said they believe the bullet was a “through and through,” and the bullet passed through, leaving two holes possibly in the boy.

Bettison said Darius Lacey, 27, and his two companions were going into the house to move things out when they encountered the mother and the new boyfriend, and the alleged exchange ensued, leading to the exchange of gunfire and the child being hit.

He and two other people ran away from the scene following the shootout. Police said while Lacey was still missing, the other party involved turned themselves in the night of the shooting.

On Wednesday afternoon, Detroit police announced Lacey turned himself in. No other information was provided.
