ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – An off-duty lieutenant rescued two people from the second story of a burning home in Oakland County.

At 8:57 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, fire officials responded to a home in the 700 block of John R Road after receiving reports of a house fire with people trapped inside.

Rochester Hills Fire Department Lt. Chris Ogg was off-duty at the time, but happened to be driving in the area, and saw the smoke coming from the house, according to a release from the city.

Ogg stopped at the house, found an extension ladder in the yard and used it to save two adults from a second-story window of the home.

The Rochester Hills Fire Department arrived shortly after Ogg and put out the fire. Fire departments from the city of Rochester, Auburn Hills, and Shelby Township also assisted.

The two victims were taken to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. They are both in serious condition, according to the city.

A dog was also rescued from the house and is being treated at a local animal hospital.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation unit is investigating.

“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Lt. Ogg for his extraordinary bravery and swift action in rescuing these residents from their home. His courage saved lives,” said Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. “And while the two victims remain in serious condition, we will continue to pray for them and their families.”
