Police search for man accused of shooting 2-year-old on Detroit’s east side

Shooting occurred over alleged domestic incident

DETROIT – Police are searching for Darius Lacey, 27, who they say allegedly shot a 2-year-old boy on Detroit’s east side.

The shooting occurred on Tuesday (Nov. 26) in the 553 block of Dickerson Avenue at 6:48 p.m.

Officials say the boy was shot in the leg and was taken to a Metro Detroit hospital by a member of the family.

The boy was in stable condition.

Police said when they arrived, they found at least 15 shell casings from an apparent domestic issue.

“So the ex-boyfriend gets into a shoot-out with the new boyfriend, and in the exchange of gunfire, his child was shot,” said interim Detroit police Chief Todd Bettison.

Bettison said they are looking for Darius Lacey, born Oct. 2, 1997. They 27-year-old was with two people who fled with him as well in a black Dodge Charger.

“And so we’re actively looking for them. We have our air units up. We have other assets, and so we expect to have Mr. Lacy in custody shortly,” Bettison said. “And if anybody knows Mr. Lacy, please call 1-800-SPEAK-UP or call the Detroit Police Department.”

Bettison said Lacey and his two companions were going into the house to move things out when they encountered the mother and the new boyfriend, and the alleged exchange ensued, leading to the exchange of gunfire and the child being hit.

“It’s a black Charger. We don’t know the exact year of it because it doesn’t have the right plate on it,“ Bettison said.

Officials said they believe the bullet was a “through and through,” and the bullet passed through, leaving two holes possibly in the boy.

The Detroit Police Department said at 10 p.m. that the other party that was involved in the shooting had turned themselves in.

DPD is still looking for Lacey.
