DETROIT – A bizarre scene had taken place on Detroit’s east side when multiple homes went up in flames.
The incident occurred on Friday (Nov. 29) at around 6 a.m. at the corner of Justine Street and Luce Avenue as firefighters worked to control the flames.
The fire started in one home and then spread to another on the south side and to two others on the north side of the street.
One couple noticed the smoke first, then moments later were startled to find Detroit firefighters at their door.
The fire jumped to a woman’s home.
“I don’t know what happened,” said the woman. “I woke up, and flames were everywhere.”
She was fortunate to have Detroit firefighters at her door to help her get out.
Another woman said she was downstairs during the devastating fire.
“I was downstairs and saw the orange flames and realized that the house was on fire,” said a woman.
The fire reignited hours later, which caused Local 4 to call the Detroit Fire Department.
One man who lived in one of the homes returned to the area to see the devastation.
“Oh my God,” said the man. “They got kids over there too.”
The home on the corner was destroyed.
A family from Yemen lived there—it was their dream home. The family had invested $60,000 in improving the home so far.
They did not insure the home and lost everything, including every hard-earned dollar they put into it.
The house next door was unoccupied, but it burned to its foundation.
Fire investigators told us the fire started there and then spread up the block to two more occupied homes.
