34-year-old victim identified in fiery wrong-way Lodge Freeway crash

27-year-old at-fault driver taken to hospital in critical condition

DETROIT – A 34-year-old man was killed on the Lodge Freeway when a wrong-way driver struck his SUV and caused it to become engulfed in flames.

The crash happened at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, in the southbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway near Grand River Avenue in Detroit.

Officials have notified his family of the deadly crash involving a Jeep that was headed north in the southbound lanes when it crashed into his SUV, which caught fire.

Michigan State Police troopers said they tried to get into the SUV, but they couldn’t because it was engulfed in flames.

They were able to remove the 27-year-old woman from the driver’s seat of the Jeep.

The 27-year-old woman who officials say was at fault remains in critical condition, and her family was with her at the hospital.

Detroit firefighters arrived and put out the fire, but the 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers in either car.

It’s unclear why the 27-year-old woman driving the Jeep was heading the wrong way on the freeway.

“The crash reconstructionist is on scene investigating the crash,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said. “We are attempting to determine where the wrong-way driver entered the roadway and where she was coming from.”

State troopers continue to investigate.
