Michigan State Police says one driver suffered critical injuries, and at least 15 vehicles slid off the road, which was separate from the crashes.
Troopers believe drivers were driving too fast for the snowy conditions as heavy blowing snow produced whiteout conditions.
MSP says a timeline for the roadway reopening is undetermined, and they are advising drivers to use alternate routes while also slowing down and driving safely.
