DETROIT – A Detroit father has been charged in the non-fatal shooting of his 2-year-old son, officials said.
Darius Daron Shantez Lacey was arraigned Saturday on two counts of assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, one count of first-degree home invasion, one count of fourth-degree fleeing and eluding and five counts of felony firearm.
At 5:45 p.m. on Nov. 26, Lacey allegedly attempted to force entry into the mother of his son’s home in the 550 block of Dickerson Street, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officers had been on patrol in the area and noticed that Lacey’s car had improper plates. When officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, Lacey allegedly fled from them.
Then, at about 6:30 p.m., Lacey allegedly returned to the home on Dickerson Street. He got into an argument with the victim’s mother and forced his way into the home.
Lacey allegedly pulled out a gun and fired several shots, striking his 2-year-old son in the leg.
On Nov. 27, interim Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said that Lacey and two companions were at the house to move things out when they encountered the victim’s mother and her new boyfriend.
They ran away from the house after the shooting. The two companions turned themselves in the night of the shooting, and Lacey turned himself in the following day.
The child was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his non-fatal injury.
Lacey was given a $500,000 bond, and a bond-redetermination hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3.
His probable cause conference is scheduled for Dec. 9 and his preliminary examination is scheduled for Dec. 16.
