ROMULUS, Mich. – As the long holiday weekend winds down, people are making their way back home.
AAA reports nearly 80 million Americans are expected to travel over Thanksgiving.
Experts predicted this holiday travel will set new records from driving to flying.
Late Sunday morning, Metro Airport experienced a lull down in baggage claim while the flight board showed a few delays for arrivals. Swarms of fliers made their way to the departure level. Experts say Sunday is expected to be the busiest single travel day.
Nearly 2.6 million Michiganders were expected to travel 50 miles or more for the holiday, which is an all-time high for Thanksgiving, and 65,000 more travelers than last year, according to AAA.
New this year, the auto club expanded its travel holiday forecast for seven days, stretching from Tuesday to the Monday after the holiday rather than sticking to the Wednesday through Sunday outlook.
Fliers expected the airports to be packed based on those projections.
In Chiquita Nabor’s case, her return flight to Metro Detroit from Atlanta went well except for a snag.
“The return flight wasn’t as bad. It was not. We had 7:15 [a.m.] flight,” Nabor said. “It was not bad at all. It wasn’t, but I am looking for my luggage right now.”
Metro Airport expects over 900,000 passengers to travel from Nov. 22 through Dec. 1.
