Michigan GOP Rep. Josh Schriver wants to ‘make gay marriage illegal again’

AG Nessel responds after Schriver says gay marriage should be illegal again

A Republican lawmaker from Oakland County said Monday that gay marriage should be “illegal again.”

Rep. Josh Schriver of Oxford made a post on social media that said, “Make gay marriage illegal again. This is not remotely controversial, nor extreme.”

This comes just weeks after Michigan Republicans gained control of the House following the November election.

He made a second post that included a video of Barack Obama from 20 years ago in which he was discussing marriage “between a man and a woman. In the post, Schriver said, “America only ‘accepted’ gay marriage after it was thrusted into her by a perverted Supreme Court ruling.”

Schriver received quick criticism for this post, including a response from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who is married to a woman.

“Please explain how dissolving my marriage, or that of the hundreds of thousands of other same-sex couples living in America, provides a benefit to your constituents or anyone else,” said Nessel. “You’re not interested in helping Michiganders. You want only to hurt those you hate. Shame on you.”

Nessel met her wife Alanna Maguire while working on DeBoer v. Snyder, a lawsuit that was filed in 2012 that challenged Michigan’s same-sex marriage ban as they were trying to jointly adopt their children.

On Jan. 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down state bans on same-sex marriage in a 5-4 ruling.

“Republicans are coming for our marriages and, if Project 2025 is any indication, their agenda goes far beyond economic policy or national security,” Nessel said on social media. “It’s about erasing the rights of those they don’t value or anyone who is different from them.”

“To the lawmakers like Representative Schriver pushing these dangerous ideas: Please explain how dissolving my marriage, or that of the hundreds of thousands of other same-sex couples living in America, provides a benefit to your constituents or anyone else,” said Nessel in the post. You’re not interested in helping Michiganders. You want only to hurt those you hate. Shame on you."

State Rep. Jason Morgan, D-Ann Arbor, also responded to the post and called his fellow representatives remarks “controversial,” “extreme,” and “anti-family.”

Schriver is no stranger to making controversial posts, and lost his committee assignment and staff back in February after posting an image of racist ideology.
