DETROIT – Police and Child Protective Services are investigating after neighbors have raised concerns about two young teens in Detroit who have allegedly been sleeping on their front porch for months, even amid cold temperatures.
CPS said they’ve been to the home on Leslie Street near Dexter on the city’s west side several times.
Many neighbors have reported seeing the teenage boys sleeping on the porch since the summer, with one neighbor saying since August.
Even though these concerned neighbors have continued to call the police department and CPS, they still keep seeing the boys on the porch.
Marc D' Andre, an independent journalist of 7 Mile Radio, posted a video on social media on Saturday night of him approaching one of the boys as he was sleeping on the porch to see if he needed help.
“He popped out from under the cover and you know I tried to ask him if he needed help in any kind of way; if he needed money or wanted to go somewhere, even into my van if to warm up for a minute,” D’Andre told Local 4. He refused everything.”
The Detroit Police Department released the following statement:
“The Department is aware of the allegations and is actively investigating the circumstances. At this time, our priority is meeting with the parents and routing as much resource as possible to the location to ensure these children are safe. The Department is deeply concerned over this situation, and any evidence of negligence on the part of the parents will be thoroughly investigated and, if appropriate, referred to the Wayne County Prosecutors Office.”
