‘Suspicious’ man running across Southfield Freeway killed by semi truck

Traffic backed up for miles following crash

DETROIT – A 44-year-old man was killed Tuesday, Dec. 3, after being hit by a semi truck as he reportedly ran from police across the Southfield Freeway.

The southbound lanes of M-39 between Joy Road and I-96 were closed for several hours following the crash.

According to authorities, Detroit police were investigating an unrelated incident at about noon when they were flagged down regarding a suspicious man in the area. When police attempted to make contact with the man, he reportedly jumped over the fence and ran across the southbound lanes, where he was struck by a semi truck and then a Ford Edge.

He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Michigan State Police are investigating the crash.
