ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Holiday Market in Royal Oak is transitioning ownership after 70 years.
The family-owned gourmet grocery store, located on Main Street, between Parent and Kenilworth avenues, was started by Tom Violante, Sr. in 1954 as a small butcher shop. In the 70 years since, it has grown to a 60,000-square-foot marketplace and hands-on cooking school, Mirepox.

Siblings Tom Violante, Jr. and Gina Mangold -- along with her husband Craig -- announced Wednesday, Dec. 4, that they are passing the business to brothers Johnny and Matthew Shouneyia, experienced grocers who already own several stores.
The Shouneyias also grew up in the grocery business and followed in their father’s footsteps. They own and operate several stores, including Value Center Marketplace stores in Clinton Township and Madison Heights and Johnny Pomodoro’s in Farmington Hills.
The ownership transition will officially take place in the coming weeks, with no changes planned for the store’s operations. The Shouneyias plan to keep all current employees.
Violante and Mangold will continue to operate the cooking school, Mirepoix.
