DETROIT – As the Detroit Lions prepare to take on the Green Bay Packers tonight at Ford Field, there are two Detroiters who won’t be rooting for their hometown team.
These two people are Rev. Dr. Craig and Shelly Ester, pillars of New Prospect Baptist Church, one of Detroit’s oldest churches, according to a social media post from the city of Detroit.
They are choosing to root for the Green Bay Packers to cheer on their son, James Ester, who is a defensive tackle on the team.
“I want the Lions to win every game, except those two when they play the Packers,” Shelly said in the video posted by the city of Detroit. “I’m not conflicted at all because I’m for my baby.”
The parents say their son attended Bates Academy and graduated from Cass Tech in 2019, and is proud to tell people where he’s from.
“Yeah, and he’ll let you know in a minute. ‘I’m from Detroit'” said Rev. Dr. Craig Ester. “And he wears it proud.”
This is James Ester’s first season with the Packers. In August, he was signed to the team as an undrafted free agent out of Northern Illinois University.
The Lions currently have the best record in the NFL, but can’t afford to stumble against the Packers tonight.
