Nonprofit seeks toy donations to bring holiday cheer to kids on Detroit’s west side

Young Men-N-Motion is asking the community for toy donations

DETROIT – A local nonprofit that works to provide resources and services for people across Detroit’s west side is asking for the public’s help right now.

Young Men-N-Motion is asking the community for toy donations to help make this Christmas special for boys and girls.

On any given day, Miss Minnie Davis and Young Men-N-Motion, Incorporated volunteers are busy at the Mathis Community Center, helping others through acts of service.

“It goes from not just people who are hungry, it’s mothers who’ve been through domestic violence situations, it’s children out there without beds, and it’s families that just need love and support,” said Tayson Stewart.

The group spent Friday (Dec. 6) distributing food boxes to local families who needed a little extra to get by.

“It means a lot to me to be able to be in position and say it’s ok, we’ve got you,” Stewart said.

However, it’s the holiday season and Young Men-N-Motion is asking for the community’s help, right now.

The group wants to collect enough toys to pass out to local boys and girls who might now otherwise receive gifts this Christmas.

“Oh, the needs are so great,” said Minnie Davis, Executive Director of Young Men-N-Motion and Programming and Services Director at the Mathis Community Center. “The thing is, there are so many grandparents raising grandchildren. And they don’t have the resources, but they want to support the kids, so we just want to make every Christmas merry for the child and have somebody bring joy.”

Davis and Young Men-N-Motion are working to stuff a truck this weekend. They’re hoping to collect enough toys to pass out to 150 children. The group’s asking for help with donations of new, unwrapped, items for the boys and girls.

“It can be games or something for the older kids, like 12 to 14 years old,” Davis said. “They are usually forgotten. We need girls and boys, but we go from zero to 14. So, if you can, please help us. Come and help us.”

Young Men-N-Motion is partnering with several local businesses to make it easy to purchase and drop off donations, helping to spread the joy.

The nonprofit will have a truck outside the Dollar Center Store at 18445 Grand River Avenue in Detroit on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The truck will be at Belmont Shopping Center at Dequindre and 8 Mile Road on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We just don’t want any child to go without,” Davis said.
