DETROIT – A wrong-way driver was killed in a head-on crash with a DDOT bus on the Lodge Freeway, according to Michigan State Police.
The crash happened at 4:40 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, in the southbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway near Log Cabin Street in Detroit.
Police said the driver of a pickup truck was driving north in the southbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway. Police were searching for the vehicle when a report came in that the truck had crashed into a DDOT bus head on.
The truck caught fire and troopers were unable to rescue the driver, who has been identified as a 58-year-old man. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver’s family has not been notified.
The driver of the DDOT bus was transported to an area hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
“At this time it hasn’t been determined where the wrong way driver entered the freeway and why they were going the wrong way,” Michigan State Police F/LT. Mike Shaw said.
