Driver killed, passenger injured when vehicle crashes into bridge pillar on I-275, catches fire

ROMULUS, Mich. – One person was killed and another was injured in a single-vehicle crash on I-275 in Romulus.

Michigan State Police said the crash happened at 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, in the northbound lanes of I-275 near I-94.

The driver of a 2021 Ford Edge was in the northbound lanes of I-275 when the vehicle went off the left side of the roadway and struck a concrete bridge pillar. The front-seat passenger was thrown from the vehicle.

The vehicle caught fire and the driver was unable to escape.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The passenger was transported to an area hospital.

Police are still working to identify the driver and notify the family.

The investigation is ongoing.
