LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. – A 21-year-old Michigan man was charged after firing shots in his backyard, striking surrounding property and patrol cars, police said.

Keegan Gerard Jackman, of Imlay City, was arraigned in the 71-A District Court in Lapeer on the charges of intentional discharge at a dwelling, attempted malicious destruction of property of an Imlay police car, malicious destruction of property of a Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office car, possession of a firearm under the influence and reckless discharge.

At 10:29 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, officers were called to a home in the 400 block of Bancroft after receiving reports of a man firing a loaded shotgun in his backyard, according to a release from the Imlay City Police Department.

Jackman allegedly fired several rounds, striking his neighbor’s home and surrounding property, a Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office patrol car and an Imlay police car.

He was taken into custody without incident.

Both patrol cars will be evaluated for their damage estimates this week, and the departments will likely seek restitution.

“If you or anyone in your immediate family is experiencing substance abuse issues and there is a firearm in the home it is extremely important that we all do our part to be responsible with firearms,” said Imlay City Police Chief Brett D. Selby in the release. “Proper reporting under the new Extreme Risk Protection order can avoid such tragedies as one of the reporting options available.”

Residents can contact Lapeer County Community Mental Health at 1570 Suncrest Drive for substance and mental health assistance by calling 810-667-0500. People can also call the police and sheriff’s departments for assistance.
