30 years ago: D’Wan Sims reported missing from Wonderland Mall in Livonia
It has been 30 years since 4-year-old D’Wan Sims was reported missing from the Wonderland Mall in Livonia.
His mother, Dwanna Harris, told police he disappeared while shopping with her. That was on Dec. 11, 1994.
“The focus is finding D’Wan, he’s 4 years old, he’s alone and he needs to come home to his mother,” Harris said in a 1994 news conference, just days after his disappearance. “The only thing that I want the public to know, is that my only concern is finding my son.”
“Whoever has my baby, I know he’s safe, and I know you’re taking good care of him . . . What I’m hoping is that someone may have ran across my child . . . We’ve got your Christmas ready, so, just come home.”
According to police, surveillance video showed Harris at the mall but did not show her son. Investigators believe he was never at the mall and the family became the focus of suspicion.
“I was here at the department and we looked at all of the video, we checked everything, and we never saw D’Wan with Ms. Sims,” Livonia police Captain Ron Taig said.

A Detroit police officer is recovering after being dragged by a vehicle late Tuesday night.
The incident happened on Dec. 10 on Saint Marys Street near 7 Mile and Greenfield, just a few minutes before midnight.
According to Detroit police, officers, who were on routine patrol, went to check on a car that was blocking a sidewalk.
As officers approached, they noticed two occupants in the car. They asked them to leave the car. The people in the car did not follow instructions. One of the officers then tried to open the car door.
The car pulled into the police car. The officer was then dragged by the vehicle.
The Detroit Police Department said the officers feared for their safety and fired a number of shots at the car.
Wayne County man facing federal charges after robbing former employer’s armored truck at gunpoint
A Wayne County man is facing federal charges for allegedly robbing an armored truck at gunpoint.
Just after 4 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2024, a man robbed a Brink’s Armored Courier driver and a Brink’s armored truck at gunpoint outside a Home Depot in Harper Woods.
In an affidavit, the driver told investigators he was collecting a monetary deposit from the home improvement store carrying the deposit when a man approached him, brandished a revolver and demanded money from him. The robber took the driver’s gun, which he was carrying in a holster.
The robber ordered the driver to get back in the truck and handcuff himself to the steering wheel of the truck; the driver complied.
After a few minutes, the robber opened the truck’s vault, filled a cash courier bag with money and left the Brink’s truck with the cash and the driver’s gun.
The robber allegedly took about $360,000 from the vault with the monetary deposit from Home Depot—which was just under $30,000.
Weather: Lake-effect snow, frigid temperatures to hit Metro Detroit -- what to know
A relatively dry start to your morning with a few flakes flying as we anticipate blustery, deteriorating conditions by this evening through Thursday morning.
Lake effect snow potential increases today and peaks tonight across Southeast Michigan. The worst of the snow will playout like last week, west of Lansing. However, snow bands will reach our area late this afternoon and evening, peaking in coverage and intensity tonight during the evening. Greater coverage toward the M-59/I-96/I-696 corridor.
Snow squalls are possible with rapid accumulation and loss of visibility, so exercise caution on the roads as white conditions occur quickly.
Highly variable accumulation of 1-3” with localized higher snowfall totals are possible. Wind gusts rise into the 30-40 mph range tonight into early tomorrow. This will create blowing and drifting snow.
