Officials said they found the 40-year-old victim on the ground, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Detroit police Deputy Chief Jacqueline Pritchett said officers observed the man was conveyed to a Metro Detroit hospital, where the man succumbed to his injuries.
“Officers at the location observed a Black male in his 40s suffering from multiple gunshot wounds,” said Pritchett. “He was conveyed to a local hospital, where later he succumbed to his injuries.”
The former sergeant, who is in his 50s and has been retired for eight years, was taken into custody, and the gun used in the shooting was recovered.
Pritchett said a warrant would be submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024.
The victim, per officials, did not have a weapon, but it was a landlord-tenant dispute that led to the shots being fired inside the home.
Detroit Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the scene and said that they were not sure if witnesses were at the scene, but people were at the location when the police arrived.
