MARQUETTE, Mich. – Many places across the U.S. are known for their snowy winter weather conditions, and a Michigan city was recently named among the snowiest towns in the country.
The Weather Channel compiled the list after going through 30-year average snowfall statistics of hundreds of towns across the country from 1991 to 2020.

To be considered, a city’s population must have been at least 1,000 at the time of the last census. Meteorologists didn’t consider unincorporated towns, mountains, ski resorts, national parks or ranger stations when creating this list.
They also limited the list to include one city from a state to be named on the list so that one state wouldn’t dominate the entire list.
So, the list doesn’t technically show the 10 snowiest cities in the U.S., but rather represents 10 of the top snowy cities.
The Michigan city named on the list is Marquette.
“Cold winds have a much longer route, or fetch, to blow over Lake Superior into Marquette than other parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula,” according to The Weather Channel. “And with the longest fetch being from a north or northwest direction, Marquette can see lake-effect snow bands last for days after a cold front passes through.”
Meteorologists reported the following snow stats for Marquette:
- Average yearly snowfall: 196.8 inches
- Average snowiest month: January (42.1 inches)
- Record snowiest day: March 14, 1997 (26.2 inches)
- Record snow depth: March 15, 1997 (63 inches)
Lake effect snow made its way across most of Michigan Wednesday evening and into Thursday, with winter storm warnings and advisories in effect for several parts of the state, including the Marquette area, according to the National Weather Service.
