Warming centers, shelters open doors as temperatures drop in Metro Detroit

Warming centers are open

Shelters and warming centers across Detroit are ramping up for the winter season.

Dr. Chad Audi, the president of Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, said they never turn anyone away even though their shelters are nearing capacity.

“We would ask anybody who sees a homeless person out try not to support them out on the street,” Audi said. “If you want to do them a favor, bring them to us. We will take them.”

The men’s shelter is located at 3535 3rd Avenue in Detroit, and the women’s and family shelter is located at 12900 W Chicago.

Warming centers welcome people during the day.

There are 12 recreation centers across Detroit that serve as warming centers.

“I would like for people to know that they don’t have to stay out in the cold,” Crystal Perkins, director of General Services Department in Detroit, said. “If your heat goes out, don’t feel embarrassed. We welcome you. We want you to come in and be out of the cold.”
