DETROIT – The the clock is ticking until Christmas Day.
On West Canfield Street, one can discover unique finds or high-end luxury goods with most of the stores having strong ties to Michigan.
By this point of the month, people are either finishing their holiday shopping or just starting the process.
“We’re doing . . . we still have everything else,” said Bobby Champine, a shopper.
In Detroit’s Historic West Canfield, sleigh bells ring, and so do cash registers.
“I come here all the time -- all times of the year,” said Sara Showers, another shopper. “This is like my go-to spot for gifting.”
Last-minute shoppers make their way to the Midtown area where they’re finding gifts just in time to put under the tree.
“They can expect the most unique holiday shopping experience in Detroit,” said Salem Daly, a customer service specialist at Third Man Records. “It’s ditching crowded mall parking lots and coming to support small, local businesses.”
The shopping is also walkable.
Third man Records, owned by Detroit’s own Jack White, showcases vinyl records, instruments, apparel and stocking stuffer.
Nearby, Carhartt is selling a limited Honolulu blue sweatshirt fast among its other staple apparel pieces.
“We opened up down here about a year ago and ever since then, I’ve been asking them please give us something special and we finally released the Hometown Heroes Hoodie which is inspired by our local teams here,” said Leo Mellinger, a store leader.
There’s also City Bird, a gift shop carrying mostly Michigan-based products and themes from around the Great Lakes State.
If you’re looking for décor to give to a loved one or friend, Nest has a selection to make a home feel warm and cozy.
At Shinola, it’s offering monograms for the perfect gift with a personal touch.
There’s also an incentive to encourage people to eat and shop throughout the area with Midtown Bingo. When a person hits Bingo, they can take it to City Bird and a gift card for any of the participating businesses.
