DETROIT – Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a 17-year-old boy, two 16-year-old juvenile boys, and a 14-year-old boy, all of Detroit, in connection with a carjacking of a 67-year-old Detroit man’s vehicle that led to an officer-involved shooting.
The 17-year-old and two 16-year-old boys have been adult-designated, meaning that upon conviction, an adult designation allows the judge to have the option of sentencing the respondents as juveniles or adults or to fashion a blended juvenile sentence with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juveniles are not rehabilitated.

The incident occurred on Saturday (Dec. 7) at 10:47 p.m. when the Detroit Police Department Commercial Auto Theft Section was surveilling a vehicle involved in a separate carjacking.
While conducting surveillance, officers observed the four boys exiting the surveilled vehicle and carjacking the 67-year-old victim’s vehicle at a gas station in the 1500 block of East Outer Drive.
Alleged that the 17-year-old boy robbed the victim of his vehicle. When officers attempted to apprehend him, it is alleged that he fled from officers on foot.
After a brief foot chase, the teen was apprehended.
The 17-year-old has been charged with three counts of carjacking and receiving and concealing a motor vehicle.
Allegedly, the 16-year-old robbed the victim of his vehicle. When officers attempted to apprehend him, it is alleged that he entered the driver’s seat of the first stolen vehicle and fled from the scene at a high rate of speed before crashing the vehicle at the intersection of East 7 Mile Road and northbound I-75 Service Drive.
The 16-year-old juvenile respondent has been charged with three counts of carjacking and receiving and concealing a motor vehicle.
Alleged the 14-year-old was a passenger in the first stolen vehicle. When officers attempted to apprehend him, he allegedly fled in a car from the scene at a high rate of speed with the 16-year-old and the second 16-year-old boy before crashing the vehicle at the intersection of East 7 Mile Road and Northbound I-75 Service Drive.
The 14-year-old boy has been charged with receiving and concealing a motor vehicle.
Allegedly, the second 16-year-old produced a handgun and pointed it at the victim before robbing the victim of his vehicle.
When officers attempted to apprehend the teen, it is alleged that the juvenile began to flee from the scene.
Officers fired, striking the juvenile in the left arm and right leg. No officers were injured in the shooting.
It is further alleged that the second 16-year-old entered the first stolen vehicle with the other 16-year-old boy and the 14-year-old respondent and fled from the scene in a car traveling at a high rate of speed before crashing the vehicle at the intersection of East 7 Mile Road and Northbound I-75 Service Drive.
Medics arrived on the scene and transported the teen to a Metro Detroit hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The 14-year-old boy has been charged with carjacking, carrying a concealed weapon, and a felony firearm.
The preliminary hearing was held on Monday, Dec. 14, 2024, in the Lincoln Hall of Justice.
The 17-year-old and the two 16-year-old boys were remanded to the Juvenile Detention Facility.
The 14-year-old boy was given a $5,000/10% bond.
