DETROIT – Detroit police are investigating reports of several vehicle break-ins at parking lots in the Midtown area over the weekend.
Investigators with the Detroit Police Department confirmed that they received reports after 11 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, that approximately eight vehicles were vandalized and had contents stolen from parking lots around Temple Street and Cass Avenue.
Reports of car windows being smashed and items stolen from vehicles began to spread across social media, when some alleged victims posted videos of their damaged cars. Those individuals mentioned they were leaving a concert at a nearby venue and arrived to find the damaged vehicles at a parking lot at Temple Street and Third Avenue.
As the investigation into the car break-ins continues, a spokesperson said Detroit police will be increasing patrols in that area, in addition to undercover surveillance.
Police are urging the public to practice situational awareness when using public or private parking lots.
DPD also suggests the following precautions:
- Park in a well-lit area.
- If there is a parking attendant, ask what time they are leaving.
- Avoid leaving any valuables in the car.
- Remove items from the seats.
- Lock the car doors.
- Consider using a parking structure over a surface lot.
