WB I-94 near Greenfield down to one lane due to crash, fuel spill

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – Westbound I-94 near Greenfield is down to one lane Monday morning due to a crash that led to a fuel spill.

The crash was reported at around 2 a.m. on Dec. 16, 2024. The freeway shut down to only one lane, causing heavy traffic in the morning commute.

According to Michigan State Police, a driver of a tractor-trailer said he “dropped” the trailer’s third axle, causing him to lose control and run off the roadway. This caused the truck to jackknife in the ditch near Rouse River. The driver was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

The trailer was loaded with 75,000 pounds of steel rolls. When the truck jackknifed, it spilled an unclear amount of diesel fuel into the ditch.

The freeway closed down to one lane as crews work to clean the spill. Everyone who plans on heading west on I-94 Monday morning is advised to leave earlier than usual.
