Owners of popular food truck alarmed after generator theft causes setback in Detroit

Item was essential for power running food truck

DETROIT – Operators of a popular food truck are raising the alarm about a recent theft that has damaged their business in Detroit.

Chef Ace Harris and his wife have owned and operated More Life Foods since 2021. The generator on the food truck the business uses was recently stolen.

“I came out, and, like, my generators were gone,” said Harris.

Harris said the generator was essential for power running the food truck. The unit was mounted to the truck with screws.

Harris said the thieves cut the wires and bungee cord that secured the generator.

“They unscrewed it, and they probably had at least five to 10 minutes to do the job,” Harris said. “It had to be about two or three people because I think the generators about 300 pounds.”

Since the thieves hit, the small business has been forced to shut down, leaving customers without their favorite vegan dishes.

Now, Harris and his team are trying to pivot and come up with a plan to recover.

He said replacing the generator is costly. In addition to making payroll for previous weeks, there are holiday orders the business must fill.

For now, More Life Foods is planning to reopen, in some way, on Friday, Dec. 20, at 9 a.m. from its normal spot at 18441 Livernois in Detroit.

However, the chef wants other food truck operators to be alert about the theft crime.

“One of my customers commented on our post and said it happened to another food truck,” Harris said.

In the meantime, the business sent a strong message to those responsible for the theft, damage, and inconvenience.

“It’s more than just me and my family who are affected by this,” Harris said. “It’s our customers. People who are trying to eat better. People who are trying to do better with their lives. And then now we’re taken out of commission for two weeks.”

More Life Foods is asking community members to support its business as it tries to raise funds to purchase a new generator.

The business has also set up a crowdsource funding page for anyone interested in helping them purchase a new generator.
