BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. – Beverly Hills has seen an unusual spike in car thefts, with police reporting that around ten vehicles have been stolen from driveways in the past month.
Sarah Lorne was among the victims, who admits she dropped her key fob in her car the night before.
“I went to go outside and grab my “work” phone and was very surprised because my car wasn’t there," said Lorne.
The theft happened Sunday (Dec. 15) night when Lorne left her keys and work phone in her blue Ford Explorer.
Using her phone’s tracking feature, Lorne located the SUV parked outside a home on Detroit’s northwest side the following day.
“Lo and behold, there’s my car,” Lorne said. “Plates on, looks like I parked it.”
While the vehicle suffered minimal damage, its interior — and inside her phone — told a wild story.
“There was some alcohol in there,” Lorne said. “Um, just ashes everywhere, little balls of weed rolling around on the dash.”
When Lorne opened her phone, she discovered that someone had been using it.
“I signed into Instagram, and it asked what account I’d like to use (some teenage boys' Instagram),” Lorne said. “They’re holding guns, one had a bunch of smoke around them, and one is holding a laser.”
Lorne reported all of this to the police and got her car, though she faced a significant towing and impound fee.
Frustrated, she decided to trade in the smelly, stained SUV.
Beverly Hills police are urging residents to stay vigilant by locking their car doors and homes.
